Combining fiction and documentary, Rosa von Praunheim portrays the dichotomy of a life split between public appearances and private longing. Rex Gildo was handsome and charismatic, and his songs and musicals made him very popular. His is a tragic story of an entertainer forced to lead a double life in the repressive society of the 50s and 60s, and and even later in his life Gildo remained closeted. Rex Gildo: The Last Dance puts the film in the context of the gay pride movement, the normative pressures of the Schlager (sweet, sentimental ballads with a simple, catchy melody or light pop) music industry, and the profound changes currently underway.
